Read Full Detailed Report - Duke Nukem 3D

Duke Nukem returns for the third time to kick ass and chew bubblegum (and he's all out of gum). You play as the Duke, and do battle with hordes of aliens, mutants, and other deadly foes who threaten earth. Your armory consists of a large variety of weapons, including FPS staples like pistols, shotguns, and RPGs, and some unique tools like the shrink ray, the freezethrower, and the jetpack.The EDuke32 engine is a port of the originally DOS-based game that allows for higher resolutions, including widescreen ones.

==Game Information==

Duke Nukem 3D is an FPS from 3D Realms, sequel to side-scrollers Duke Nukem and Duke Nukem II. You play as macho, gunbound, one-liner slinging Duke, voiced by Jon St. John, and fight against an alien invasion of Earth. Level design frequently features real-world environments, filled with secrets, non-linear routes, interactivity, and lots of humor.

Duke Nukem 3D has gone open source, and this DR is based on the source port eDuke32.

==Version==

Based on EDuke32 2.0.0devel 20100311.

==Method==

Native. EDuke32 requires DUKE32.GRP. If you have installed Duke Nukem 3D, you will find this file where ever you installed the game to.

When launching eDuke32, you will get a launcher. Make sure fullscreen mode is enabled. If it is, all of your resolutions should be available.

==Screen change==

Hor +

1600x1200

1920x1200

1920x1080

1920x698 (Ben-Hur mode)

==Supported resolutions==

Confirmed: 1280x720, 1280x768, 1280x800, 1440x900, 1680x1050, 1920x1080, and 1920x1200

==Singleplayer anomalies==

The auto-map has some aspect ratio issues that prove problematic.

First, 16:10 is the only aspect ratio where it works correctly. You can tell because when you rotate it, other aspect ratios have a skewed look, as objects change their dimensions as they rotate (what used to become a square turns into a rectangle as it turns 90 degrees, and back to a square as it turns another 90 degrees).

In 4:3, the map is both hor - and horizontally squashed. It's like it gets horizontally squashed and then it zooms in like that was supposed to compensate.

In 16:9 and wider, the map simply stretches horizontally.

Ben-Hur

The map is used constantly throughout gameplay, and IMO, this distortion goes beyond an aesthetic fault, so I have to consider this a consequential flaw.

==Multiplayer support==

Multiplayer is a bit complicated to set up - I used a too called YANG to automate the process somewhat, but nobody else was playing. In any event, widescreen worked fine when I hosted a Dukematch.

==Aspect ratio support==

All aspect ratios scale hFOV properly.

==HUD stretch==

The HUD stretches.

==Cut-scenes==

FMVs are stretched.

1600x1200

1920x1200

There are also some static 2D screens in between episodes, and they too stretch.

1600x1200

1920x1200

==Surround==

Supported natively, hor +. See shots above.

==Grading==

Calculated grade: C

Map issue is a consequential flaw.

CCE: 100%

The weapons looked stretched and appear to have some vert - behavior.

I noticed (but declined to comment on) the weapon vert -'ness, but I didn't notice the stretching. Actually, on closer examination, it seems they are correct in 16:10 and upward, but squashed in 4:3.

Addressing some of your issues for the next version.

Give me a shout when it's up. I'll re-do the DR.

Here, try this one: http://dukeworld.duke4.net/eduke32/synthesis/20100703-1665/eduke32_win32_20100703-1665.zip

There's no widescreen awareness in the HUD for the replacement models found in the HRP yet, but they aren't part of the original game at all so defects there don't really count. ;) Will still be addressed later, but the actual game is the main priority. Everything else should be fixed.

Ben Hur was a film in the 50's that was 2.35:1 in aspect ratio IIRC. Look it up on IMDB or wikipedia if you want to know more about the film itself.
