Read Full Detailed Report - Asheron's Call

Asheron's Call is a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game. The original Asheron's Call release was in November 1999, followed by an expansion pack in 2001 (AC: Dark Majesty), and most recently in 2005 (AC: Throne of Destiny). While players aren't required to purchase the latest expansion pack, players are required to install the graphics update that shipped after this expansion. This graphics update included support for DirectX 9.0 and more flexible monitor resolutions.

Are there any obvious config files that can be edited? If there are, one might contain the FOV setting, and this would allow for a precise FOV setting, and therefore, a proper hor+ solution.

I don't think this is controllable via INI, but I'll dig around this evening. The FOV setting used to be available as an ingame command: '@render fov ###'. This was removed though when they updated the graphics engine and added the FOV slider on the Config tab.

It has to be stored somewhere. If you can't find anything obvious, I would try this.

Launch the game.
Set the FOV slider to min.
Quit.
Make a copy of the Asheron's Call folder.
Launch the game.
Set the FOV slider to max.
Quit.
Delete the Asheron's Call folder and rename the copy to the original folder name.
Launch the game.
If the FOV is at the minimum, then the FOV is stored somewhere in the folder. Look harder.
If the FOV is at the maximum, then the FOV is probably stored somewhere in Documents and Settings, or the registry. Look in those places.

Sure enough, it was hiding in another folder:
%MYDOCUMENTS%Asheron's CallUserPreferences.ini

For a 16:10 display, I recommend the following value:
FieldOfView=100.00

Nice job. Now that you have a surefire way to adjust the FOV precisely, can you update the "method" section to reflect this? Please specify the default FOV, your recommendation for 16:10, and your recommendation for 16:9. When you do that, I'll do the grading.

Just a suggestion, you might want to change
%MYDOCUMENTS%Asheron's CallUserPreferences.ini
to
My DocumentsAsheron's CallUserPreferences.ini

Because the %MYDOCUMENTS% env var might not work for everyone, but "My Documents" should work for everyone.

Also, I think you overestimate the ideal 16:9 FOV. According to the FOV Calc, it should be closer to 105 than 115.

==Grading==

Calculated grade: B
Potential grade: B+

Major unresolved issues:
None

Minor unresolved issues:
Does the game support 1920x1080 and 1920x1200?

Summary of flaws:
.ini solution

I'll split the difference with you on the 16:9 ratio and call it 110. :wink:

I don't have a 16:9 display though, so it's still a best-guess estimate as to where the benefit ends and the distortion begins.

You don't need a 16:9 display. You just need to be able to use 16:9 resolutions, take screenshots, and compare afterwards. That's what I do.
