Wow, hold up, I never said TH doesn't work at all. Any standard mode that's 4096 pixels wide or less works fine.

Here's triple 1280x1024 (3840x1024):

If you're running three 16:10 widescreens, the highest resolution you'll be able to run is 4096x853, like so:

I don't suppose that changes the grade but that's right, Penumbra works in Surround, as long as the res is lower than 4096 pixels wide. Everything 2D stretches but the gameplay is perfectly Hor+.

1024x768

1280x800

3840x800

On a sidenote, I got my Penumbra Overture off a magazine and settings.cfg is located in the main install folder, not in My Documents.

I guess I hadn't thought this totally through - I had just assumed that 3x16:10 users were screwed.

Grade is unchanged, but there's one less blemish.

Grade: B-

Stretched HUD, 2D elements, and FMVs are blemishes.

CCE: 100%

Yeah, I don't mean to bump, but I just ran it in triplehead myself, can an admin please update the wiki to say that surround works?

Looks like the engine for this game went open source. Any chance of a community member taking a crack at fixing some of the widescreen and surround issues with this game? :bowdown

Edit: Ok, this is really weird. Remember that 4096 pixel limitation that we ran into before? I don't know what changed, but that llimit appears to be completely gone. I just ran Penumbra: Overture and Penumbra: Black Plague at 5292x1050 (5040x1050 with bezel correction).

Unfortunately, mouse acceleration appears to be FUBAR. As the aspect ratio gets wider, the mouse gets slower on the horizontal axis (Metro 2033 has the same problem). It makes the mouse feel weird in widescreen, and basically makes the game unplayable in Surround/Eyefinity.

Good news for people with fancy mice and independent x axis speed config, I guess.
The 4096 pixel limit was probably just a DirectX flag, not a real engine limitation.

Well, since the source code is out, it might be fixable now

The 4096 pixel limit was probably just a DirectX flag, not a real engine limitation.

The game uses OpenGL, not DirectX...

After experimenting a little bit, it's starting to look like a video driver limitation. If I roll back my video drivers far enough, I suddenly start getting the 4096 pixel limit again (happens with both ATi and Nvidia's drivers).
This doesn't just effect Penumbra, either. The older drivers also restrict games based on the Doom 3 engine to 4096 pixels in width.

Long story short, update those video drivers people :onethumb

I was gonna say, I ran the game in 4320 x 900 just fine.

Nice find anyway.
