On most forums that I frequent, when you click an external link, it opens in a new tab. This is nice as I usually don't want to lose my place where I am. It is possible to setup this forum to act that way? Perhaps the better first question would be if most users would prefer that to the current method.

Thanks,

Chris

I dunno mate, links are links. By default an internal link will open in the same tab, an external link will open in a new tab. And then there's God's gift to PC users: the right mouse button. :P

+1 The site is already setup in this way.

Then there's God's gift to God himself: the Middle mouse button, also clicking on a tab with the middle button will close the tab. :onethumb

Unless IE changed it or your not using IE or Firefox, press your middle mouse button on a link will open it in a new tab, regardless.

Interesting... well, maybe there is something odd in my browser. I'm using Chrome and for any other forum I use externals always open in a new tab, but not here. I dunno...

Unfortunately, I don't have a middle button. I'm using a trackball from Kensington. I'll have to see if I can set one of the upper two buttons to "open in a new tab."

Test link: http://www.google.com

He is indeed right, that is an external link that does not open in a new tab.

Whether that is the expected behavior or not is up for debate. I ALWAYS use middle mouse when I want to open something in a new tab.

Man oh man, and all those years I was assuming The Absolute Tab Master Button was just a wheel. :bowdown

This worked in phpBB2. In phpBB3 the default is an internal link. There is a mod you can do. I tried, but it's a huge pain and I couldn't get it to work. With the upcoming move to Drupal, I'm not doing any new mods to the phpBB.

If your middle mouse button is broken you can also use ctrl+click.
