Just for future reference:
It might be that you are using the little web installer, which thinks it is wiser than the user.
For older versions use what is called the 'redistributable'. About 100mb it often comes on DX9 game discs or can be found online. DirectX 9.0c was the last version for Windows XP.
It's always handy to have a copy around if you are going to play older games, although with your specs that appears unlikely
Also, if something older refuses to install try compatibility mode for the OS it originally came out for on the installer exe.
