I bought 2 mini DP ->DVI active adapters only to have one fail after about 10 minutes. I was then fortunate to find mini dp to dp cables (no adapter, just a cable with mini dp at one end and dp at the other). Definitely the best solution as far as I am concerned, so worth hunting around for.

Yes it was a failed adapter. I picked up two mini DP to DP cables (no adapter involved) and eyefinity is back up and running. Now just waiting for the replacement Alienware on Thursday hoping for the instant crash on starting games in eyefinity (even COD4!) to be resolved.

I reckon you are right - one of the adapters seems to have stopped working completely now so I can only view two screens. I'm off to the shops to buy DP cables and cut out the adapters.
